How might we bring the Liebherr Crawler Crane to life in a way that's true to the real thing without becoming overwhelming?

The Liebherr Crawler Crane set was designed to be used together with the LEGO Control+ app, giving users full control over all crane functions. The app’s controls and displays are designed to mirror those of the real-life crane, providing an authentic operating experience. Visual feedback, data readouts, sensors, and alerts work together to guide the user and support informed operation.
I was responsible for leading a design team towards designing an operating experience that was authentic and fun to navigate.
The creative direction was shaped by studying the real-life crane, including its +3,000 page instruction manual.
I briefed, tested, and reviewed design deliveries through all stages of development
Highlighted design elements were foot pedals for driving, multi-functional "joystick" controls, and monitors with visual data.
I also pushed the team towards inventing new ways of controlling the crane.
This included a drag-and-drop style interaction with visual safety guides that kids could choose to abide to – or dare defy!
